Verhagen Sweeps Sunday
Millville, NJ - Round 18 of the 2016 F1600 Formula F Championship Series season saw Neil Verhagen double up, winning his second race of the day by .011 seconds for K-Hill Motorsports. It was a similar story to the morning race as he beat out teammate Peter Portante to the finish line after a race run under full green flag conditions. Phillippe Denes finished third in a Team Pelfrey Mygale.
"I was planning my approach to the end running in fifth early on," said Verhagen. "So I made my moves toward the end. The close finishes have been expected."
With two wins and a third place on Saturday, Verhagen extends his points lead going into the final three rounds of the season at VIR, Sept. 30 - Oct. 2.
For Portante, it was his second runner-up finish of the day for K-Hill Motorsports in the No. 24.
"I have to buy a watch since some of these races come down to timing, but that is how it works," said Portante. "We had the two best cars this weekend, but it all comes down to timing."
Portante also took home points for a number of pole positions, starting from pole in two of three races for the weekend, while Verhagen took the third pole in a strong outing for the K-Hill Motorsports team.
"It was a good, hard close race, but we didn't have enough in the end," noted Denes. "We need to get some really good results at VIR and hope for the best."
Calvin Ming finished fourth while teammate Kaylen Frederick, in another Team Pelfrey car, made it two top five finishes in a single day.
Frederick spent most of the late stages of the race locked in a battle with K-Hill's Hans Ada, who finished sixth after the entertaining fight.
Will Harvey was seventh while Mike Scanlan won the Masters Class for the third time in two days in the No. 2 Spectrum/Honda.
