Selmants Returns to F2000 Championship Series, Sets Fastest Lap

August 15, 2013

AKRON, Ohio- Following a strong season debut in the SCCA Pro Racing F2000 Championship Series at Mid-Ohio two weeks previously scoring a Top 5 finishing position, 20 year old Ohio native, Joey Selmants, made a successful return to the series with John Walko Racing this past weekend, securing his best results in the highly competitive series to date.

Having a prior scheduling conflict, Selmants was forced to jump directly into qualifying on Sunday without any practice sessions. Ever up to the challenge, Selmants responded by immediately setting the fastest lap in the strong thirty car field. As the session advanced and times continued to fall, Selmants exchanged fast lap with championship leader, Tim Minor, before having to settle for fifth after being balked on a flying lap late in the session.

Lead engineer, John Walko, elected to make minimal changes to the car for the race and the decision paid off as Selmants was able to bring the car home in a strong fourth position and set the quickest lap of the race in the process.

“Heading into the weekend, we knew it was going to be a challenge heading into qualifying with no practice sessions,” said the third year Ohio State student, “but we knew we had a great package to work with and John gave me the best car I’ve ever had the privilege to drive. To be a tenth of a second off of the track record with such limited seat time in an open wheel car makes me extremely excited to see what the future holds.”

“Jumping in cold Sunday morning, competing for pole and finishing fourth while setting multiple fastest laps of the race in one of the most competitive racing series in the country would be a tall order for a seasoned veteran; this was Joey’s fifth open wheel race ever. I’m impressed! Hopefully we can put a full championship program together for him in the near future.”
