Robinson Takes Pittsburgh Victory
Wampum, PA – Skylar Robinson drove his No. 12 K-Hill Motorsports Mygale/Honda inside Jordan Cane in turn one on the last lap, and then held off a pass from Scott Andrews at the flag stand to take his first F1600 Formula F Championship Series victory in round 13 of the season taking place on Saturday evening at the new Pittsburgh International Race Complex. Andrews finished second by .069 seconds with Cane right behind in third place to complete the podium.
Robinson has been consistently fast all season, but has been denied victory on a number of occasions. After leading Friday practice at the 2.8-mile track, he started from fourth and stayed out of some incidents to be in a position to win in the closing stages.
“It was long overdue, it’s been so tough this year, we’ve been so close so many times,” said Robinson. “I need to thank the whole K-Hill crew, they’ve just been working so hard this year and it’s good to pay them back.”
Andrews battled from a low starting position in eighth to the front and nearly took a win with a late charge out of the final corner in his No. 94 Spectrum/Honda. He adds to his points lead with eight races left in the 21-race season.
“That was pretty crazy,” said Andrews. “We’ve been a bit behind the eight-ball this weekend, we’ve been throwing everything at the car and are getting close. I can’t believe the race turned out the way it did, definitely some luck on my side.”
Cane, who won for Pelfrey at Mid-Ohio, led to the white flag, but had to settle for third in his Mygale/Honda.
“It was a shame, it was a great race,” said Cane. “We managed to make up three spots on the first lap. It was just unfortunate Rob (Megennis) my teammate had a crash or he would be up here too.”
Cane, did, however, lead a Pelfrey trio to the checkered flag, with teammates Ben Auriemma and Andrew Hobbs following.
With a sixth spot finish, it was Jim Goughary winning the Masters Class. Will Harvey and Thomas McGregor finished seventh and eighth, with Andy Lewis in a solid run for Chastain Motorsports in ninth. Kenneth Boquillion was tenth overall, and second in the Masters Class.
Involved in a mid-race incident that produced a lengthy cleanup, Steve Bamford, Robert Megennis and Kyle Kirkwood failed to finish. The three were in a group of a number of cars battling for the race lead.
