Robinson Sweeps Sunday F1600 Races at NJMP
Millville, NJ – Skylar Robinson won both F1600 Championship Series races at New Jersey Motorsports Park on Sunday, taking a victory in the morning race with a last lap move and repeating the same performance in the afternoon race.
Round 17 – Morning Race
Robinson, involved in a three-car fight for the lead for the majority of the race, dove to the inside and made it three wide on the last lap in turn one. With the prime real estate, Robinson drove his K-Hill Mygale/Honda out of the turn in the lead to take his second victory of the F1600 Series season in round 17.
“We really picked up in the second half of the season, I need to thank K-Hill for the awesome job, it's nice everything is starting to come together,” said Robinson. “I don’t know what I was thinking on the last lap, I was hoping it would work out.”
Jordan Cane failed to make it four wins in a row, finishing second after leading a number of laps, while his Team Pelfrey teammate Robert Megennis was third as those two battled with Robinson and traded the lead back and forth throughout the final stage of the event.
While the field got through the first corner cleanly on the start, it was an incident coming out of turn two that involved a number of cars that brought out a full course caution. Five cars in the incident failed to finish.
On the restart, it was a tight race up front, also involving points leader Scott Andrews and Team Pelfrey’s Andrew Hobbs. As the race developed, Andrews would go off, rejoining to finish 11th, while Hobbs pitted with problems and failed to finish.
Starting from pole, Ben Auriemma finished fourth while Thomas McGregor was .011 seconds behind in fifth.
Austin Mack and Cameron Das were sixth and seventh, while Steve Bamford won the Masters Class in eighth ahead of Ryan Bjerke and Dexter Czuba.
Round 18 - Afternoon Race
The afternoon race would follow in a similar fashion, with Robinson engaged in a race-long fight with Cane and Megennis in a trio of Mygale/Hondas.
With Cane leading under the white flag, Robinson tried the high line again in turn one, and with some nifty driving made the move work to take the lead and edge ahead of Cane by .039 seconds at the finish line with Megennis two tenths behind after an entertaining 20-lap race.
Early in the race it was Team Pelfrey out front, before Robinson moved toward the lead pack in his K-Hill entry and broke away from the field with Cane and Megennis.
Behind them, Auriemma and Andrews were fighting over fourth, while eventual Masters Class winner Bamford drove through the field, eventually finishing fourth.
The race marked a notable DNF for points leader Andrews, who retired after going off in turn one on lap 13.
A mix up on the last lap in the second pack of cars dropped Auriemma, McGregor and Hobbs down the order, with Auriemma finishing fifth and McGregor sixth, while Hobbs was ninth, behind Austin Mack and Cameron Das.
Dexter Czuba completed the top ten in the afternoon race, matching his morning result.
After damage from the morning’s race, Jim Goughary, Art Foster and Kenneth Boquillion did not start.
The F1600 Formula F Championship Series concludes its season with a triple-header weekend from Pittsburgh International Race Complex, Oct. 16-18.
