Round Nine Scrapped at WGI

October 15, 2011

Watkins Glen, NY – F1600 Series officials declared a “non-race” following a large opening lap incident at the first of two races at Watkins Glen International (WGI) for the season finale weekend. More news from Series officials is expected shortly.

A big opening-lap incident prompted a race stoppage that dragged on as clean-up crews worked.

All drivers were reported to be fine after the incident.

The incident going into turn two on the first green flag lap was reported to be caused by David Clubine and Colin Thompson, who came together in front of almost the entire F1600 field. At least eight cars were involved in the opening-race drama.

Weather conditions were less than favorable at Watkins Glen all day, with morning qualifying run under the threat of rain in extremely cold and windy conditions. The skies opened up before lunch time, but the rain had moved away by the race, leaving a very damp but somewhat drying race track that left most of the field on full wet Hoosier tires.

Sunday closes the 2011 season with a 9:40 (local time) morning qualifying and 2:10 race start prior to the Series awards ceremony. Stay tuned to F1600Series.com for updates.
