Matthew Cowley Signs with Team Pelfrey F1600 for 2017 Season
TAMPA, Fla. - Team Pelfrey is excited to officially announce the signing of Matthew Cowley to its F1600 Championship Series team for 2017, marking Cowley’s first season of racing in the United States.
“Signing Matthew to our program solidifies Team Pelfrey’s intentions to bid for yet another championship,” said Team Pelfrey F1600’s team manager, Geoff Bushor. “Matthew’s experience in British Formula Ford competition will be one of his biggest assets in the coming season.”
Cowley has spent the last two years running Formula Ford in the United Kingdom where racing competition is fierce. Running as a father son operation, Cowley has been a frontrunner with multiple wins and podiums to his name. Having tested with Team Pelfrey’s F1600 operation twice already, the decision was made to make the jump to North American competition for 2017.
“I am very excited to be part of the Team Pelfrey family,” stated the enthusiastic 19-year-old. “With race and championship winning teams all the way up to INDYCAR, Team Pelfrey was our first choice after deciding to race in the States. We did a mid-season test last year, and the professionalism was beyond expectation. I can’t wait to go racing.”
Winner of the Walter Hayes Pre '90 and the BRSCC National Pre '90 Championships are just a few of Cowley’s impressive accomplishments. He was also selected for the Andy Priaulx Sports Management “Young Driver Development Program”. In 2016, Matthew was awarded the Scottish Motor Racing Club (SMRC) “Rising Star” for Formula Ford, and The Graham Peacock Trophy for “Driver of the Year”. This was awarded to Cowley for his overall attitude in the paddock, for racing and sportsmanship behavior, both in and out of the car.
Reestablished in 2011, Team Pelfrey has quickly become one of the most successful teams in junior open-wheel racing, with 6 championship titles, 47 wins and 139 podiums. The team have high hopes of adding to that significantly with the notable addition of Matthew Cowley to its driver roster. The team operates in the F1600 Championship Series, USF2000 Championship, Pro Mazda Championship and Indy Lights.
