Koykka took the pole.

Alton, VA – Matias Koykka continued his pace, taking pole by just over a tenth of a second in the No. 10 Spectrum/Honda at VIR for the first F1600 race of the weekend. Koykka shattered the existing track record by some four tenths of a second but the Finnish 17 year old went off on his last lap, damaging the car. Garett Grist was second quick for Bryan Herta Autosport, followed by Colin Thompson.

Jeremy Grenier will line up fourth on the grid with Brandon Newey, also driving a Mygale/Honda for Bryan Herta Autosport, rounding out the top five.

Art Foster was the first of the Ford-powered cars, in 11th.
