Frederick Takes First Win
Wampum, PA - Breaking away from the pack, Kaylen Frederick scored his maiden F1600 Series win at Pittsburgh with a 1.6 second margin on Team Pelfrey teammate Phillippe Denes on a sunny Sunday afternoon as Peter Portante finished third.
"I took a shot for first and started running away with it and stayed there the rest of the race," said Frederick, who was denied his first win on Saturday by .002 seconds. Frederick has been charging forward since his mid-season debut at VIR for Team Pelfrey and took Sunday's top spot after starting fourth.
Denes marked his best finish of the weekend with a second place result in the No. 81 machine for Team Pelfrey in round 15 of the 21-race 2016 F1600 season.
"It was a good race, we couldn't get Kaylen at the end. The caution mixed things up, it was a fun race," said Denes.
Portante matched his morning result with a second-straight third place finish for K-Hill Motorsports in the No. 24 Mygale/Honda.
"It's not too shabby, the car was great and the team was great. F1600 is like playing black jack, it kind of happens like it happens," said Portante.
Neil Verhagen, however, could not make it three-for-three, unable to sweep the weekend after two thrilling victories on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Verhagen started from pole and finished fourth for K-Hill in the No. 3 Mygale/Honda. Two strong wins will give Verhagen momentum as he now carries the Championship lead to a triple-header New Jersey Motorsports Park at the end of the month.
Calvin Ming completed the top five in the third and final Team Pelfrey car, with Hans Ada in sixth for K-Hill and Dexter Czuba in seventh for Bjerke Motorsports.
Mike Scanlan won the Masters Class. "It was a little different than this morning. I had pretty good pace, but I'm not sure I had anything for Steve (Bamford)," said Scanlan. After running as high as second, a last-lap incident ended Steve Bamford's potential podium run in the Rice Race Prep Mygale.
