Formula Race Promotions Tackles Road America with Success

July 2, 2026

Formula Race Promotions (FRP) brought another action-packed weekend of open-wheel racing to Road America's iconic 4.014-mile layout in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, as competitors across the F1600, Atlantic, and F2000 delivered three days of close, competitive racing through one of North America's most beloved circuits.

"Road America never disappoints, and this weekend was a perfect reminder of why we love coming here," explained FRP's Bob Wright. "The competition across every class was incredibly tight with photo finishes needed to decide some winners, and the drivers gave everything they had. Weekends like this are exactly what Formula Race Promotions is all about, and we can't wait to build on this momentum for the rest of the season."

With Road America now done and dusted, it is less than three weeks until the next Formula Race Promotions event weekend at Watkins Glen International in Corning, New York.

F1600

In the always competitive F1600 class, Cooper Travis set the pace in Formula 1600 qualifying at Road America, clocking a best time of 2:22.467 in his #17 entry to claim the class pole position on the long Road America circuit. Travis held a comfortable margin at the top, with K-Hill Motorsports’ David Ybarra slotting into second with a 2:23.344. Phil Kingham earned the F1600 Masters class pole position, grabbing the third overall time.

The battle for positions four through eight was exceptionally tight, with just two-tenths of a second separating Boss Patel, David Adorno, Bob Reid, Axel LeRoy, and David H. Livingston Jr. Jake LeRoy rounded out the top-nine at 2:24.872, setting up what promised to be a fiercely contested race with so much of the field blanketed within two seconds of one another, and a massive draft available around the long Kettle Moraine circuit.

David H. Livingston Jr. turned in a drive to remember in F1600 Heat Race 1 at Road America, bringing his #85 Spectrum to the checkered flag in first position after eight laps at Road America. Earning the overall F1600 win and the F1600 Masters class victory, Livingston was the man of the hour at Road America. Qualifying pace-setter Cooper Travis crossed the line in second, posting the race's fastest lap, while F1600 Masters competitor Phil Kingham rounded out the podium in third. Boss Patel finished fourth with Bob Reid, another F1600 Masters competitor, in fifth putting three elder statesmen inside the top-five. Christian Menezes, driving a rented car due to some border complications for his Brian Graham Racing program, completed the top-six with the K-Hill Motorsports duo of Axel and Jake LeRoy ran seventh and eighth respectively, with Greg Peluso ninth. The race came to a premature conclusion, ending under a Full Course Yellow.

David Ybarra opened Sunday's action at Road America in dominant fashion, claiming victory in F1600 Heat Race 2 for K-Hill Motorsports. Ybarra also set the fastest lap of the race at 2:24.621, completing a commanding all-around performance. Behind him, the battle for second was decided only after a video review of the finish, with Boss Patel confirmed ahead of Cooper Travis for second and third respectively — a reversal of fortunes from Saturday's heat, where Travis had led the F1600 class. Axel LeRoy crossed the line fourth, with Phil Kingham taking F1600 Master class honors in fifth overall. Christian Menezes finished sixth, ahead of second place of the F1600 Master runners Bob Reid and David Adorno in third, but seventh and eighth overall. Jack Haydu and Greg Peluso completed the top-ten.

David Ybarra closed out the Road America weekend in style, claiming victory in the F1600 Feature Race for K-Hill Motorsports to complete a dominant Sunday that saw him add the feature win to his Heat Race 2 triumph. The margin of victory told the story as Cooper Travis pushed Ybarra all the way to the line, crossing just 0.072 seconds behind in one of the closest feature finishes of the season. Boss Patel held on for third, with David H. Livingston Jr. just 0.013 seconds behind in fourth to claim the F1600M class victory — a margin that underscored how tight the battle was throughout the top-five. Phil Kingham rounded out the top-five and took second in the F1600M class. Christian Menezes, Jake LeRoy, and Bob Reid completed positions sixth through eighth, with Axel LeRoy ninth. Greg Peluso finished one lap down in tenth.

Atlantic / F2000

In the Atlantic 016 class, Harbir Dass claimed Atlantic 016 class pole with a time of 2:00.072 in his K-Hill Motorsports entry, placing him second overall in the combined session. Fellow K-Hill Motorsports driver Dudley Fleck was close behind at 2:00.216, with John McAleer completing the 016-class order in third at 2:01.947.  Nicho Vardis topped the Atlantic Open class in his posting a best lap of 2:05.439. J.R. Smart qualified second in class just over a second behind, while Jeffrey Antonelli slotted into third, just ahead of James French.

David Otte earned F2000 class pole for turning a best lap of 2:14.552 in his #4 Van Diemen RF01. Carter Sheets was right on his heels at 2:14.739, with the two separated by less than two-tenths of a second. Robert Wright, Ethan Alexander, and Dave Weitzenhof rounded out the F2000 order in third through fifth.

Harbir Dass delivered a commanding performance to take the Atlantic 016 class win in Heat Race 1 at Road America. Dudley Fleck showed blistering pace — posting the fastest lap of anyone in the field at 2:00.816 — but was classified second in class. John McAleer managed only four laps before his day came to an early end but was placed third in the final results.

J.R. Smart inherited the Atlantic Open win after trouble to James French occurred in post-race technical inspection. Smart, finished third overall, but first in class after completing 13 laps with a best time of 2:07.198. Jeffrey Antonelli followed closely in second to join Smart on the podium with Nicho Vardis classified third in the end. James French crossed the line first in class but was subsequently disqualified for being underweight at post-race impound.

David Otte led the F2000 class home winning by beating Carter Sheets and Robert Wright who joined him on the podium finishing second and third in class. Dave Weitzenhof rounded out the top F2000 finishers in fourth and Ethan Alexander completed the top-five.

Dudley Fleck delivered an impressive turnaround in FRP Atlantic Heat Race 2 at Road America, taking the Atlantic 016 class win and overall victory. After falling out of Heat 1 with just eight laps completed, Fleck bounced back emphatically to top the class. John McAleer was equally resurgent, recovering from a difficult Heat 1 exit to finish second in class just four-hundredths of a second behind Fleck. Heat 1 winner Harbir Dass had a tougher run in Heat 2, completing 11 laps to take third in class.

J.R. Smart was the class of the Atlantic-Open runners, finishing fourth overall and first in class with a best time of 2:09.808. James French and Jeffrey Antonelli both retired early after just two laps making it an easy run for Smart to score the win.

David Otte continued his strong F2000 class form, leading the class home in fifth overall, but first in class to take top honors in F2000. Carter Sheets ran him close again in second with the pair separated by the slimmest of margins. Dave Weitzenhof and Robert Wright completed the F2000 top-four with Ethan Alexander rounding out the top-five.

The FRP Atlantic and F2000 Feature Race at Road America was a triumph for Dudley Fleck, who capped a dominant weekend by claiming the overall win and Atlantic 016 class victory for K-Hill Motorsports. John McAleer delivered another strong performance to finish second overall and second in class, continuing what had been a remarkable bounce-back weekend after his difficult Heat 1 exit. Harbir Dass rounded out the Atlantic 016 overall podium in third.

In the F2000, Carter Sheets reversed the order from the heat races to claim class honors for Layke Motorsports with David second in class posting the fastest F2000 lap of the race at 2:16.277. Robert Wright and Ethan Alexander completed the F2000 top-four. The entire Atlantic-Open field chose not to start the feature race ending their weekend early.

Wright continued, “Next stop, Watkins Glen. We are putting the finishing touches on what is set to be an epic weekend, and we hope to see you there!”

Next up for FRP will be a trip to Watkins Glen International over the July 17-19 weekend
