Alton, VA – Finnish rookie Matias Koykka paced four F1600 Formula F Championship Series test sessions at VIR on Thursday prior to the opening doubleheader weekend of the 2012 season. The Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing driver was out front in all of the day’s sessions in the No. 10 Spectrum/Honda entry.

“There is room to improve,” said the 17 year old, noting that it is his first season in cars, as he comes out of karting with limited experience. “F1600 is a good place to start for car racing and the car was good as soon as we got on track this morning, so we are moving in the right direction.”

Koykka set his fastest time at the end of the day, a full tenth of a second under last year’s qualifying record.

The Thursday test day at VIR featured some two hours of track time, and opened with frigid weather conditions in the morning before the track warmed throughout the day. Moderate to high tempartures are predicted for the rest of the weekend.

Garett Grist, driving for Bryan Herta Autosport, was second fast in the last session of the day in the Mygale/Honda and was followed by Joe Colasacco, Roberto Lorena – for Quantum Racing Services, and Colin Thompson.

Mike Scanlan, Art Foster, Tim Dunn and Steve Bamford followed in positions six through nine.

John McCusker, still getting used to the F1600 car after much karting experience, improved to tenth in the last session, and said he was going faster every lap. McCusker is currently leading the WK Manufactures’ Cup point standings.

Brandon Newey was subject to an off-course excursion following a parts failure on his Bryan Herta Autosport Mygale/Honda, but the team was able to repair the car and get it back out for a few laps in the final session of the day.
