Championship Weekend for FRP at NJMP
Salem, NH – It’s the final weekend of the 2017 Formula Race Promotions (FRP) with Championships on the line in F1600, F2000 and Atlantic at New Jersey Motorsports Park’s Thunderbolt Road Course. The trio of FRP Championships will join forces with the Trans-Am Series for an action-packed spectator weekend.
In F1600 Championship Series competition, Team Pelfey’s Matthew Cowley is hoping to close out his strong season with the title, and enjoys a slim yet manageable points lead in the No. 80 Mygale/Honda over main rival Zach Holden.
Holden will need a near perfect weekend at Thunderbolt in all three F1600 races for K-Hill Motorsports to steal the title away from Cowley.
Similarly, a number of other drivers remain eligible but are long shots. They include Jonathan Kotyk and David Osborne from Team Peflrey, and K-Hill’s Yuven Sundaramoorthy.
All F1600, F2000 and Atlantic cars will compete at New Jersey, like every other weekend, on long-lasting spec Hoosier rubber.
In the F1600 Masters Class, a season-long battle will come down to Rice Race Prep driver Joel Haas, who looks to claim the title over Mike Scanlan.
Rice Race Prep recently announced an expansion in its F1600 team, acquiring three additional cars for the 2018 season. Simon Sikes will debut in team colors this weekend in the No. 27 machine.
In the F2000 Championship Series, Brandon Dixon has the math on his side and could claim the 2017 Championship in round 13 set for Saturday afternoon.
John McCusker and Tim Paul are tied for second in points, while Steve Jenks, in fourth, is also still in the picture for the Championship.
Dixon has assembled a consistent and strong season, with two wins in 12 starts, the most recent coming in F2000’s last race at Summit Point, giving him perhaps the most momentum heading into the weekend at New Jersey.
McCusker, meanwhile, has matched Dixon’s win total with two trips to the top step of the podium. He will be joined at DotWorks Racing by brother and another F2000 race winner, Austin McCusker.
Paul and Jenks continue to search for their first wins, and are as close as ever coming off strong races at Summit Point in August.
In the Atlantic Championship Series, K-Hill Motorsports driver Peter Portante hopes to clinch the title at New Jersey Motorsports Park. If Portante converts his strong season to a Championship win, it will be K-Hill’s third Atlantic title in the last four seasons.
Testing commences from Thunderbolt on Friday morning, with Saturday and Sunday featuring a packed, spectator-friendly and track-time heavy schedule.
