Cape Motorsports F1600 Season Recap
Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing and driver Jake Eidson claimed the 2013 F1600 Formula F Championship during the final weekend at Summit Point. It was the team’s second championship in as many years.
Eidson had a stellar year, winning seven of 12 races, the most in series history. The young driver also claimed five poles and won the championship by 49 points.
His wins included Road Atlanta Race 2, both races at Lime Rock Park, Mid-Ohio (1) Race 1, both races at Mid-Ohio (2), and the final race of the season at Summit Point. He finished second in both races at Virginia International Raceway and in Mid-Ohio (1) Race 2, and he finished third in Summit Point Race 1. He failed to finish on the podium in only one race in 2013.
“To be able to win the F1600 Championship Series is an honor, and I cannot thank the Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing team enough,” said Eidson. “The team did an amazing job this season to make sure we had the fastest car out there and it showed. The Spectrum F1600 Honda performed great at each race and I could not be happier.”
Following the championship weekend, Eidson competed in the Team USA Scholarship Shootout at Anderson Race Park. He was one of six racers invited to compete for the honor. Two young drivers will be selected to represent the Team USA Scholarship in a pair of prestigious end-of-season Formula Ford events in England.
“We are extremely happy to win our second F1600 Driver Championship in a as many years,” said team owners Dominic and Nicholas. “Jake is an incredibly talented driver, and we couldn’t be more proud of his accomplishment in the series.
“It was a very difficult decision for Jake and his family at the beginning of the season to compete in the series. We are firm believers in the F1600 Series, but as with many drivers, it is more appealing to move straight to the slicks and wings, which is a big step in a young driver’s career. By doing that, the drivers miss important knowledge that cannot be learned anywhere other than F1600 Series, which we believe is the purest form of motorsports. It has been proven for more than 50 years, worldwide. HPD and the F1600 Championship have provided this platform for young drivers to learn their trade in F1600’s original format, with open chassis wars, which inevitably drive the budget cost down, enabling the chassis manufacturers to put the best drivers in their cars, which is exactly what we did with Jake. What the competing manufactures have done with their drivers is evident by just seeing at how many good drivers have moved from F1600 to the next two steps on the ladder.”
As previously announced, Eidson will drive for the team in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship powered by Mazda in 2014.
“Our focus is now on the USF2000 series for next year, and the goal is to simple - repeat the success we had this year,” Eidson said.
