ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (August 2, 2012) – Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing picked up another F1600 Formula F Championship Series with Shae Davies’ win in Round 8 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The win for Davies, his third in four races, brings the team’s total to five wins this season.
Both Davies, a Spectrum Borland Racing Factory Driver in Australia, and teammate Matias Köykkä had podium finishes in both races. Davies finished third in Race 1, while Köykkä had a second-place finish in Race 1 and a third-place finish in Race 2. After Round 8, Köykkä sits second in the point standings, only a few points back from the leader.
“This is weekend was truly an unforgettable one,” Köykkä said. “After a great battle on Saturday with everything from rubbing tires to light rain, the team did a huge effort to prepare the car for Sunday. Not the best performance from me, as I did some mistakes, but I am happy to get two finishes and gain some points in the championship fight. We still have two long weekends left, so the key is to stay fast and focused.”
Race 1 was a battled for both drivers, as both had contact that left their Honda Spectrums with black marks on their noses. The team worked hard to get the cars ready for the next day. Davies picked up the pole for Race 2, his first of the season and the seventh for the team. He again had his hands full, but was able to hold on for the win.
“That was a fun race,” Davies said. “The car’s balance was really good, and we found a sweet spot in qualifying, taking the pole, and that set us up for the race,” Davies said. “It was a long race and I wanted to pace myself. The caution helped us cool the tires. I had a good battle with Matias and when I saw him fighting with Garett in the mirror with two laps to go I was able to open up a bit of a gap.”
The team changed the motor of Köykkä’s car after Race 1 and was thankful to Quicksilver Race Engines for their ability to get a new motor to the race track in time for the second race.
“We owe big thanks to Sandy and everyone at Quicksilver Race Engines for getting us an engine for Matias for Race 2,” team owner Nicholas Cape said. “It had to come from Maryland, through the night, and the
team did a great job getting Matias out for qualifying at 8 a.m. (on Sunday).”
